早期不无"激烈"思想的废名因对五四"科学主义"的误读和革命的恐惧,在周作人等的引导下愈益显示出颓废的色彩;废名的颓废人生观因始终执着于人生本体论追问及"人生如梦"、"自由"等的新解表面上具有积极的成份,但实质上乃是饰以科学色彩的主观唯心主义的完全沉溺,具有超越周作人等的颓废性;与周作人、俞平伯等文学趣味主义者的颓废有余、唯美不足相比,废名始终执着于"美丽"文章的雕琢,煞费苦心地进行"梦"的培植与释放,并最终以其独有的"废名式"语言狂欢融入中国现代趣味主义文学思潮聊以消遣的整体追求之中。
