The Long - Range Plan of Scientific and Technological Development （1956 - 1967） is the first long - range plan in the field of science and technology in New China. Its making and implementation not only solved a large number of scientific and technological questions demanding quick solutions and narrowed the gap in science between China and advanced countries, but also built up many new branches of learning and disciplines in our country; very quickly China roached the world＇s advanced level in some fields. These achievements guaranteed the independence and development of the new- born People＇s Republic and laid a solid foundation for speeding up scientific and technological innovation and progress, thus exerting great and far- reaching influence over China＇s development in science and technology.
