We can find many features of the generation in the middle and late 1970s in Xiong Yu's painting, such as the visual style of cartoon, illusion-like experience, cool images and colors, absolute self-center and love of digital culture. Different from last generation who so much care about history, politics and others, they are indulged in their own world, hiding in their own images and illusion, searching for the release of life.
We can see "I" in illusion in his painting. Xiong Yu creates an image about "I", who has melancholy eyes, slim neck, appears to be sensitive and lonely, even with an air of vanity in a plastic tight, swallowing in transparent water of fish bowl, or staring with blurred big eyes under acid light.
Beauty and vanity in illusion is the spiritual scene like fairy tale belonging to this generation that created by Xiong Yu. Xiong Yu's works belong to a kind of realistic expressive theme, and visual spaces of most paintings create a visual illusion on purpose. Water is a basic scene, just like the attracting cave in which I escaped outside in childhood. In water, the young man gets body floating, without pain on face, just some melancholy.
