Drawing on the theory of ethnic identity, this paper gives a cultural interpretation of 'the Northerner' image in Hong Kong films between 1960s and 1990s, touching upon such issues as the formation of and shift in the relationship between the self and the other, the ethnic identity of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong’s cultural imagination of mainland. The author understands Hong Kong films’ construction of the 'mainland other' as an exclusive cultural strategy in the service of the need for self identity. Making reference to the strategy of othering in particular films, it makes an analysis of the multiplicity and variability the cultural identity of Hong Kong.
