'Three Hundred Poems' is an important term in the historical studies of The Book of Songs. 'Three hundred' is generally regarded as the actual number of poems collected in The Book of Songs, and 'Three Hundred Poems', just another title of the collection in pre-Qin period. This paper makes an analysis of the context in which the term emerged and, taking into consideration the terminological convention in pre-Qin literature, argues that 'three hundred' is an 'idiom' meaning 'multitudinous' in the pre-Qin period. Thus, 'Three Hundred Poems' means a great number of poems. This is a new logical starting point for discussing questions related to the historical studies of The Book of Songs.
