Many numeral idioms come into being in the development of Chinese and English languages, but numbers in them differ in form and meaning. Thus it is not easy to keep the form and meaning in translating numbers in Chinese idioms into English. ＂Func- fitional Epuivalence＂ put forward by Nida is instructive for studying the methods to translate numbers in Chinese idioms into English, for it emphasizes the equivalence of language function instead of language form in translation.
