英国著名戏剧大师莎士比亚所著《威尼斯商人》中的夏洛克是莎士比亚所塑造的最复杂的人物形象之一。长期以来夏洛克一直被认为是一个贪婪,吝啬,残忍容一身的不受欢迎的反面角色。强烈的金钱欲使他失去了人的正常感情,成为一个爱财如命的吝啬鬼,一个残酷无情的家长。他把钱视为命根子,甚至他认为金钱比他的女儿更重要。这一切评价似乎已成定论。然而作为一个犹太商人,我们还可以看出他是一个具有性格多面性的立体形象,他作为一个放债人,也有令人同情的一面——要求在人格上与他人平等,他为奴隶代言,这是他令人敬佩的一面。本文拟从夏洛克的地位,处世方式及宗教信仰等方面来探讨夏洛克形象的多面性。

Shylock in the play ＂The Merchant of Venice＂ is one of the most complicated characters composed by the world famous playwright Shakespeare. For a long time Shylock has been regarded as an unpopular villain who is not only greedy but cruel. His strong desire for money makes him lose the feelings that a normal person should have, turns him into a cruel parent and a miser who loves money more than anything else in the world. He even believed that money was more important than his daughter. Such comments on him seem to be known to all. But we should see other aspects in him. Being a Jewish merchant, he is a many--sided figure. In addition to the aspects we mentioned above, he is also a person whom we should show mercy on, demanding equal rights with others in personality and speaking for the slaves. This paper presents a survey of the features of the image of Shylock.
