Two Different Feelings under the Same Motif： A Comparison Between Tess of the Dtwbervilles and Frontier City

《苔丝》和《边城》都是关于纯洁美好的乡村姑娘的爱情悲剧。作家对故土风情描述的迥异和对寄托作家理想的主要人物刻画的不同，反映出在爱情悲剧这同一母题下，两住作家表达的是不同的情怀：哈代表达的是颓废的悲观主义，而沈从文则更多地表达对重建故土乐园的期待。

Tess of the Durbervillcs and Frontier City are both tragic stories about pure and beautiful country girls. By analysing the authors＇different description of the sceneries and customs in their hometowns and of the main characters on whom the authors ideals are placed, this paper holds that with the guide of the same motif of tragic love Hardy shows his decadent sentiment, while SHEN Cong-wen indicates his expectation of reconstructing paradise on his hometown.
