Railway and the Emergence of Zhuzhou City：1898 -1951

20世纪初，株萍铁路和粤汉铁路相继建成通车。株洲作为两条铁路的交汇点，在抗战时又由此向西展筑湘黔铁路，遂成为中国南方重要的交通枢纽。铁路对株洲城市的兴起有着巨大推动作用：铁路枢纽地位带来了运输业的迅猛发展。使株洲迅速成为货物转运中心和商品集散地；促进了株洲近代工商业的起步、发展与繁荣；导致了株洲人口的聚集和街市的扩张。在50年间，株洲由一个小集市迅速发展成为具有一定规模的城市。

In the early twentieth century, Zhuzhou-Pingxiang railway and Yue-Han railway were open to traffic. Zhuzhou, the cross of the two railways and the start of a newly built Xiang-Qian railway during the Anti-Japanese war, has become an important hub of transportation in Southern China. Rail transportation plays a great role to the emergence of Zhuzhou city. First, with the boom of its transportation, Zhuzhou has become a transfer and distributing center for all kinds of commodities. Secondly, railway transportation promotes the devolopment and prosperity of morden industry and commerce of Zhuzhou. Thirdly, it also causes the gathering of population in Zhuzhou and the extension of downtown streets. In a word, owing to the construction of railway, Zhuzhou has grown from a small town into a fair-sized city in fifty years.
