From the perspective of French Existentialism, the old bind man and his master in Life as string are just like Camus's Sisyphus in that they persist in trying to restore his sight, though knowing that there was no possibility. Therefore their life takes on the tragic significance of absurdity. Interpreting Life as String from the standpoint of Zen Buddhism, the conclusion is the same: life is meaningless. However, Zen Buddhism takes nothingness as abundance and advocates taking things as they come. Since life is meaningless in itself, there should not be so much bothering about gaining or losing. Eat when hungry, sleep when tired and let nature take its course, which is the living practice of "nature is supreme, life is consummate."
