在法兰克福学派中最先涉及且发展出一套完整的通俗文化理论体系的思想家是洛文塔尔。与阿多诺相比,洛文塔尔为我们提供了另一种大众文化研究方法:站在批判理论的立场上,运用文学社会学的方法来剖析通俗文化问题。他对通俗文化所作的"跨学科研究"与其立场和方法论预设紧密联系。洛文塔尔沟通批判学派与经验学派的研究方法,将批判理论与文学社会学方法相会通与融合的尝试开创了通俗文化研究的新方法。

In Frankfort school, it is Lowenthal, a great thinker, who first developed a complete theoretical system of popular culture. Compared with Ardomo, Lowenthal presents another research methord of popular culture： in light of the critical theory, issues in popular culture are analyzed in the method of sociology of literature. His “interdisciplinary study” of popular culture is closely associated with his standpoints, methodology and hypothesizes. His efforts to combine the research methods of the critical theory and those of the empirical school and to fuse the critical theory into the sociology of literature develop a new method to do popular culture study
