Dr. Ma Lirong, professor of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Shanghai International Studies University, discusses the issues of Western hegemony, discourse hegemony, identity politics, and Edward Saidg key concepts of Orientalism and Covering Islam in her new publication Arab-Islamic Problem Research in the Western Hegemonic Context. To gain the dominant role in the Arab-Islamic World with the Middle East as its nucleus is one of the most important aspects of Western hegemony, which will naturally lead to endeavors to gain a dominant power of narrative or discourse hegemony. The struggle for hegemony and discourse hegemony is considered to be a part of identity politics by some scholars, so the reconstruction of identity on the basis of the dialogue between civilizations and cultural consciousness is the one of the most serious challenges facing all the civilization systems including ArabIslamic civilization.
