公共新闻运动是在"民主思潮"的影响下,由面临困境的美国报业和公共广播组织出于提升公众政治参与热情和增强自身影响力的双重目的发起的运动,在其背后有着复杂而深刻的理论背景和现实动因。
The American public journalism movement has a complicated background. It was an interpretation of the Deweyan public spirit in the trend of communitarian thoughts and deliberative democracy. In the United States, new media are booming. Newspapers, however, are declining, and PBS and NPR are in dilemma. With the worry of their future and the worry of political cynicism, small local newspapers, PBS and NPR started public journalism movement as an attempt to reconnect with audience them and to recreate "the public".
