Membrane technology was put forward for seawatcr desalination in 1950s. A breakthrough in membrane making was made in 1960s and seawater desalination was commercialized in 1970s. Since then, reverse osmosis has become the most economic process for seawater desalination. Salt has been produced in a large scale from seawater concentrated by electrodialysis. The perfluorosulfonic and carboxylic ion exchange membrane is the core for modern chlor-alkali industrial technique. All of them are the important marine industries. With its new invention and continuous improvement, membrane technology will play an important role in the deepgoing development and utilization of marine resources, and in the marine investigation, exploration and monitoring. It is true that membrane technology will push forward the further development of marine industries.
