Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is highly prevalent and can affect up to 20% of the population. It is a common gastrointestinal (GI) disorder associated with alterations in motility, secretion and visceral sensation. A range of clinical symptoms characterizing this disorder includes altered stool frequency and form, abdominal pain and bloating.
