道器之辨是中国哲学史长期讨论的话题;道器之辨经历了道器本末未定论、道本器末论、器本道末论三个发展阶段;道本论强调要"以道御器",让器服从于道,服务于道;而器本论者认为道器不相分离,无形之道不能脱离有形之气。

The distinction of Dao and Qi（definite things） is a controversial theme in the history of philosophy. This distinction experiences three phases of indetermination of Dao as essence or as utilities, the phases of Dao as essence and Qi as utilities, the phases of Qi as essence and Dao as ut ＇ities, The doctrine of Dao as essence emphasizes that Qi must obey and serve Dao, But the doctrine of Qi as essence insists that Dao and Qi can never be separated. The immaterial Dao cannot be divorced from the material Qi.
