Reflections on the Thinking Modes between Chinese and English Languages

思维方式制约着文字起源和语言结构。中华民族形象、直观的思维方式一定程度上决定了汉字起源的象形性和汉语语法直观、意合的特点,而英语民族抽象的思维方式也促成了英语字母文字和英语语法的抽象性和分析性。理清语言文字与思维方式之间相互影响、相互制约的关系对汉英语言教学、翻译和跨文化交际具有重要意义。

The difference between Chinese and English languages to a certain degree corresponds with the difference between their writing systems and ways of thinking. The pictographic nature of the origin of Chinese writing system has played an important role in the making of Chinese thinking mode and the directness and the pamtactic nature of the grammar of Chinese. The abstractness and the analytic nature of English grammar were caused almost in the similar way. It is very important to make clear the relationship between the language of Chinese and English and their character origin and their ways of thinking,especially to the language teaching and learning, translation and intercommunication.
