The Origin of the Place Name "Tiantai" and its Diction Expression

浙东天台山取义于此山上应天上台星,故而得名。因其山为台州之镇山,向被视为台州之象徵,台州即以此山而得名,故自初唐以降长期被用于代称台州。宋朝初年改始丰县名为天台县。但是此后仍然以天台作为台州之通称。古人交际多喜用代称等手法称地望,以构成含蓄蕴藉之表达效果,今人解读古代文献多有误解通称台州之天台为天台县之天台,应从把握其来历与交际习惯入手解决问题。

The Tiantai Mountain was named because it symbolized the ＂ Star Tai＂. Due to its important station, the mountain was regarded as the symbol of Taizhou which had got the name from it since the early Tang dynasty. In the early Song dynasty, Taizhou ＇s original name Shifeng County was changed to Tiantai County which stood for the whole Taizhou district. The ancient people preferred to call a place with its substituted name to express its connotation. Therefore, people should know the origin of the place name and the ancient communication mode to avoid misunderstanding the name ＂Tiantai＂.
