James Mill was the famous utilitarian economist , ethicist and educational thinker in the 19th century in England. He argues that the objective of education should be the realization of the happiness of oneself and others , and that education is the very important environment that affects human qualities of mind . This article makes an introduction and analysis of Mill＇s utilitarian educational theory and reveals the social and historic background which engendered it. The authors argue that Mill＇s utilitarian educational theory has certain rationalities , but it was not perfect for the reason of historic and social class restrictions.
