From the angle of development history of reference librarian system and subject librarian system, the paper has compared the similarity and difference between reference librarian and subject librarian in concept, service object and service content, service mode, service nature, service model, role and responsibility, quality capacity, etc. The paper holds the view that under the situation of increasingly changing IT, it isessential to establish and perfect the subject librarian system, which is the necessary demand of knowledge innovation in the knowledge economic age and also the demand to render library service innovation and improve information service quality and levels.
