Futabatei Shimei's Cloud Drift has been considered the first novel of Genbun Itchi. Ozaki koyo's The Golden Night Fork is a representative work of Japanese realistic literature at the turn of 20'h century. The two novels published in different ages but had the same fate, that is, both of them are uncompleted works. This essay aims at exploring the reason why the two novels were not completed and then discussing the deeper meaning behind the fact that they were not completed.
