This paper first summarizes the development of information exchange technique in substation automation system in China, introduces the applications of IEC 60870-5-104 transmission protocol in substation information exchange. Then analyzes IEC 60870- 5-104 protocol in detail, presents a software design scheme which is available in practice. Finally, introduces the future applications of IEC 60870-5-104 in substation automatic system, and gives some suggestions for solving the existing problems.
