Their Eyes Were Watching God, the masterpiece of the black authoress Zora Neale Hurston, is one of the earliest novels focusing on black women's self-consciousness in the Afro-American literary history, Hurston accepted not only the difference of her cultural heritage but also its validity. In her writing lies her strong sense of a culturally-grounded self and racial identity, which agrees with Alice Walker's definition of feminism. Her writing is considered as the classic mode for black woman writing.
