In kolthoff buffer solution of pH10.5,Bi(Ⅲ) forms a complex with bromopyrogallol red and a sensitive adsorptive peak on the single sweep oscillopolarography appears at -0.65V (vs.SCE).The peak current is proportional to the concentration of Bi(Ⅲ) over the range 6.0×10 -8 to 6.0×10 -6 mol·L -1 .The detection precision is 2.0×10 -8 mol·L -1 .The determination of microamounts of Bi in hair and compound bismuth aluminate was made by this method and the result is satisfactory.The character of the polarographic wave and the mechanism of the electrode process has been studied.The results indicate that the polaropraphic wave is an adsorptive wave of complex.The adsorptive wave is caused by the adsorption of 1∶1 complex Bi(Ⅲ) and bromopyrogallol red ,followed by the reduction of to [Bi HBPR′].
