普鲁斯特式的写作方式体现为一种总体的意图:尽可能多地告诉读者人物言行的隐含动机、内心生活,尽可能多地揭示事件隐藏的真相、隐晦的背景、隐蔽的意义。这种"尽可能多地告诉读者"的写作方式与海明威式的"尽可能少地告诉读者"的写作方式正好形成对比。如果说海明威式的写作只是暗示海面下八分之七的冰山,那么普鲁斯特式的写作则旨在让海面下的冰山尽可能地浮出海面。基于这一写作意图,《追忆似水年华》的叙述者在叙述的同时,还承担了一个分析者的功能,引导读者不断将表象转化为真相,将隐义转化为显义,将瞬间的感性经验转化为透彻的领悟。
Proust's writing shows his general intention to reveal to the reader more about the hidden motivations and inner lives of the characters in his works and more about the underlying truth, background and meaning. The so-called "trying-to-reveal-more-to-the-reader" writing style is sharply contrasted with Hemingway's writing style-the "trying-to-reveal-less-to-the-reader" style. If Hemingway's writing conceals seven eighths of an iceberg below the water, Proust attempts to let the base of an iceberg surface above water. Based on this intention of writing, the narrator in A la Recherche du Temps Perdu also functions as an analyst, who leads the reader from the superficial to the true, from the implicit to the explicit, and from the experience at the moment to total comprehension.
