Another Possibility of Bi-Axial Operation:A Response to Zhao Yiheng’s Idea of Semiotic Disaster

赵毅衡的《两种经典更新与符号双轴位移》认为,当下盛行的大众群选经典化摒弃了文化的纵聚合轴作用,仅由横组合轴的粘连加以完成。这种双轴位移将导致符号的灾变和文化大劫。本文从三方面探讨避免符号灾变的可能性:第一,单轴运动引起的厌烦;第二,教学和研究机构的纵聚合作用;第三,知识分子在后现代运动中的主导功能。这些可以从形式上保证文化的双轴运作的某种程度的协调。其中,至关重要是知识分子要在现代文化运动中起批判性的作用。

Zhao Yiheng holds in his 'The Innovation of Two Kinds of Classics and Bi-Axial Semiotic Displacement' that the mass selection of classics that prevails today has discarded the convergent function of culture and only relied on the horizontal connections of assemblages. This bi-axial displacement will lead to semiotic disasters and cultural damages. This paper holds that there is a possibility that can avoid such consequences. Three factors that can guarantee the harmony in the bi-axial cultural operation: first, the boredom caused by single-axial movement; second, the vertical convergent function of teaching and research; and third, the dominant function of intellectuals in the postmodern movement. The most important is to let the intellectuals play their critical function in the modern cultural movement.
