Way to Sustainable Development in Foshan

Foshan Municipality is located in Guangdong Province of China with an area of 78 sq. km. in the city prop-er and a population of 0. 44 million. In spite of the obvious contradiction between too many people and less land,yet a considerable success has been achieved in the construction of human settlement through many years effort.In June of l996, Foshan became one of the excellent model cities among China’s housing estates and participatedin the 2nd United Nation’s Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat Ⅱ ) in Istanbul of Turkey and was ap-praised as one of the 98 excellent model cities in the world. Emphasis has been laid on the following aspects for Foshan:1. To attach importance to city planning, and to insure and promote the city’s coordinated development ofeconomy by means of scientific city planning.2. To adopt a policy of moderately leading development in the construction of the city’s infrastructure.3. To preserve famous historic and cultural cities: Foshan has been named for over 1300 years, and one ofChina’s "4 famous towns" ， being of the state level of preservation. Much work has been done in the preservationand restoration of the cultural relics during the construction and the development of new district and the protec-tion of old relics are well coordinated.4. In the construction of ecological environment, attention has been paid to the elimination of pollution andthe enhancement of Landscape.5. In the construction of housing estate, many with complete supporting facilities has been completed. Percapita floor area in the city proper has been increased from 5. 3 sq. m. in 1979 to 13 sq. m. in 1996. It is expect-ed to solve completely in 1998 the problem of deficit floor area for those households with per capita floor area lessthan 10 sq. m.
