近代中国华文报纸由外国传教士创办。宗教宣传是传教士最早的办报理念。报刊在发展中逐渐以宣传资产阶级言论自由、西方科学技术和文化观念、主张中国改革封建主义政治体制为特征。传教士的早期办报特征,在某种意义讲也决定了近代华人早期办报的理念。

Initiated by foreign commissioners, modern China＇s Chinese-language newspaper is focused upon religious propaganda. However, in the course of its development, the focus has been subtlely slanting to otherwise function： for bourgeois speech freedom, western science and technology, western cultrual yews and inculcating China＇s need for reform on its feudalistic political system. This converted property, to some extent, determines the purpose of modern newspapers by Chinese newspapers by Chinese newsmen.
