In the field of mucoadhesive vaginal drug delivery system, mucoadhesive polymers are of considerable interest, which helps drugs to maintain a certain level locally, to extend drug residence time at the administration site and to reduce dosing frequency and the amount of drug administered. Here the characteristics and major application of mucoadhesive polymers like polyacrylic acids, chitosan and cellulose for vaginal drug delivery and their safety considerations are reviewed.
