Objective To investigate the changes and clinical significance of serum sex hormones in male patients with lung cancer. Methods The follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), progesterone (P) and prolactin (PRL) of 27 male patients with lung cancer proven clinically and pathologically, 19 male patients with benign pulmonary diseases and 34 healthy male subjects were examined and analyzed statistically. Results The serum levels of T were higher and those of E2 lower in male patients with lung cancer than those of healthy male subjects (P〈0. 01), while the serum levels of P, LH, PRL and FSH showed no statistical difference between them (P〉0. 05). The serum levels of T, P, E2, LH, PRL and FSH in male patients with benign pulmonary diseases were not significantly different to those in healthy male subjects (P〉0. 05). Conclusion There are disorders and imbalances of sex hormones in male patients with lung cancer. The detection of T and E2 is valuable in diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.
