Reshaping "Farmers' Mentality": Key to the Nurturing of New Farmers

"农民意识"是农业社会典型的思想观念和行为方式,家族本位是其根基。新中国建立后,经过几十年的努力,农民的思想意识发生了巨大变化,正在经历由"家庭人"向"社会人"的转化,并在此基础上开始了向"现代化"转化。但在社会转型期,在新旧思想交汇、碰撞中,农民依附与主体意识并存、传统与现代意识混杂、科学民主与迷信宗法意识交织在一起,其正直、诚实、善良、勤劳等美德,无形中被依附、顺从、自私的"农民意识"所吞没,他们开拓进取的活力仍然受到限制。因此,改造"农民意识",无疑是培育新型农民的关键。

＂Farmers＇ Mentality＂, which is based on family-centeredness, is characteristic of the beliefs, ideology and behavior of the farming society. With efforts through the last few decades since the establishment of the PRC, there have been great changes in the ideology and beliefs of Chinese farmers who have completed their transformation from family-centered people to social people and have begun their process of modernization. At the time of social transformation when new thoughts clash with old ones, modem ideology mix with traditional values, farmers＇ dependence mentality coexist with their egoism and knowledge of science and democracy mingle with their beliefs in superstition and family doctrines, the ＂Farmers＇ Mentality＂ of the dependent, obedient and selfish farmer will virtually prevail over farmers＂ virtues such as honesty, integrity, benevolence and diligence. Consequently, the farmers ＂vitality and enterprising initiative will be greatly constrained. Hence, reshaping ＂Farmers＇Mentality＂ is the key to the nurturing of new farmers.
