This paper explores a new way of casting about cognates by using initials instead of whole syllables. The examples used are not so-called basic words, which is a strategy for testing the method. The words here are ice, snow, frost, hail, and the like. Each of their initials are different in language branches, and represent distinctive lines of sound changes. So the reconstructions for their initials need not only rules but the knowledge of their people's geographic distribution and cognition for world. At last some reconstructions about these words by scholars are commented under comparing with the results of the paper.
