This paper explores the function of the 'displacement' and 'destruction' of desire on the level of narrative syntax upon the deep structure and full significance in the text of D. H. Lawrence's Women in Love, with a discussion of the semantic implications of this discursive form in characterization and, especially, the linguistic meanings of the themes such as the class division, anti-social attitude, and the fleeing from the modern civilization and city life. The paper attempts to point out that in this novel the critical consciousness of and the ideological predicament faced by an intellectual in a specific society are, to a great degree, conveyed by the inner meanings of the 'displacement' and 'destruction' of desire as the story line and the textual characteristic.
