高等学校英语能力测试(确切说应称专科英语能力测试,以下统用这一名称)是1998年开始发展起来的一项大规模测试,其社会影响日益扩大,但人们对其特征、性质等知之甚少。本文将从其考生、测试形式、施考时间、测试目的、测试内容等方面详细介绍该项测试。

Practical Enghsh Test for College （Pretco）, as a large-scale test attended by candidates from vocational schools, three-year course colleges, private education, and adult educa- tion, has been developing since 1998. As its social influence is increasing, people want to know more about it. This article will introduce its candidates, format, administering time, purpose, contents, and so on. There is no large-scale standardized test not based on one or more testing theories. Pretco builds upon the psychometric-structuralist approach and the psycholinguistic-sociolinguistic approach. In the end, the article points out that as a large-scale test, it still needs improvement in text selection.
