Design of Tangshan Tennis Hall

Tangshan Tennis Hall, completed in June, 1995 for the Third sino-Japanese-Korean J uvenile Sports Meet,is situated on the north side of the Sport Centre of Tangshan, occupying an area of 7400 sp. m. with a total floor Lrea of 4200 sq. m. Having a seating capacity of 1800 with a sports usable area of 21 ×10m, it is a multi-purpose building for basketball and volleyball match etc.The overall mass concept addressed architectural environment is based on the c0nsideration of its uses,structural techniques. The construction site, which is an irregular triangle, is at the cross of two main roads of the city. To acquire better harmony with the environment, a simple oval plan was adopted and the main space inside was so desihned as to suit its utilities.The design of the major space and the plan layout come form the function. The roof has adopted a cohesively vanished spheroid, which is in contrast and echo with the tapered multi-use gymnasium on the south side.The entrance of the auditorium is an extension of the side of ellipse f0rm, which makes the audience entrance merge into and organic whole with the major model. The great steps outside the entrance which are connected with the outside square space are spacious and of a smooth down-grade. The modelling of the tennis hall includes a symbol of tennis.The proect is highly appraised after its completion as a spot of scenery in Tangshan, winning the title of one of the "Ten Best Architectural Buildings" of Hebei Province.
