Optimization toolbox of MATLAB and theory and implementation of its arithmetic is introduced. It is used to solve the rod string optimal design issue of the rod pump system. The optimal results show that by using the MATLAB arithmetic, the mechanical design efficiency can be improved because not only is the arithmetic reliable and effective, but also the program designed is simple. The study is important reference to solve other optimal design.
