Objective To establish a rat model of fetal alcohol syndrome and to understand the morphological changes of the rat model. Methods Twenty adult female rats were given drinking water with successively increased concentration of ethanol before pregnancy, starting at a concentration of 3 % and ending at 20 % (v/v). Pregnant rats were randomly divided into two groups. Ethanol drinking group were provided liquid diet containing 20 % (v/v) ethanal and were maintained on this diet for 4 days. Control group received a normal diet without ethanol. Morphological characteristics of fetus and newborns in each group were evaluated. Results Head length, body length, body weight, interocular breadth and palpebral fissure length of newborn rats in ethanol drinking group were significantly decreased than in control group. There were three outcomes shown in fetus of ethanol drinking group : normal fetus, malformed placenta with resorbed fetus and malformed fetus. Conclusion Morphological changes related to the developmental toxicity were found in rat model of fetal alcohol syndrome.
