The design of any children's garden must begin from an understanding that all children are creative individuals that have the capacity to play, imagine and create their own stories in a garden. That said, creating children's gardens in public landscapes requires careful planning and a process that begins with a clear vision. This vision must be supported primarily by a process that interacts and engages children to ensure they are adive participants in the design and secondly through comprehensive site analysis. Many children's spaces fail due to poor plant performance. Understanding the existing micro climates on the site and how they can be best manipulated to maximize plant growth under the expected pressure of many thousands of feet can help to avoid this. Planning for the lan Potter Foundation Children's Garden in the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne began with a clear vision. It involved a range of meaningful consultation activities with children. It saw many physical site modifications made including soil amelioration and extra drainage. And finally it placed a strong emphasis on good plant selection. This paper describes all these processes used in design of the garden and believes they are the reason for the gardens success and enormous popularity.
