Evasive answering is ubiquitous in political discourse. Based on the theory of equivocal commu- nication initiated by Bavelas et al, the paper expounds the motivation and effects of the typical evasive answers in Bush vs. Kerry TV debate, with a view to enabling the audience to raise the awareness of equivocal communication and have a better understanding of political discourse.
