Danish English writer Dinesen’s account of her life in pre-independent Kenya in Out of Africa has given rise to many controversies. It has been famously denounced, for instance, by leading Kenyan writer Ngugi for misrepresenting Africa during colonial times. This paper reviews Ngugi’s critique of Dinesen and, adopting the perspective of the liberated African people, questions Wan Xue-mei’s 'post-colonial' and 'feminist' reading of the book.
