A Comparison between the Chinese and Western Artistic Imagination Theories

艺术想象是中西方文艺理论研究领域中的重要范畴。想象植根于中西方文论不同的土壤中,其从萌芽到成熟的理论发展,都有着明显的差异。同时,我们又可从中发现微妙的联系和相似的表述。如想象的自由性、想象的形象性、想象的创造性方面的共同推崇。各具特色的想象论,又可谓各有所长,这正可以构成一种互补关系,推动艺术想象论研究的深入。

Artistic imagination is an important topic in the research field of western and eastern artistic and literary theory. Since the theoretical development of imagination, from sprouting to maturation, theories have become are dramatically different when rooted in different soils of eastern and western culture. Such difference can be found in examples such as how imagination theory is regarded, the road to maturation, whether to break and go beyond the constraints of time and space or to obey the nature＇s time and space law, whether to emphasize the difference between imagination and day-dreaming, and so on. Meanwhile, subtle correlations and similar expressions can be found between eastern and western artistic imaginations. For example, they share the same respect for the freedom and creativity of imagination. Distinct imagination theories have their own advantages, which can be used to form a complimentary relationship and move the further development of the imagination theory.
