Human cognition and experience of the world is fundamentally metaphorical in nature. Metaphor is frequently used in communi- cation and it not only reflects the sirmiarities of human cultures, but is also influenced by the characteristics of the each culture. Tiffs paper compares the choices of image schema and their metaphorical meanings of English and Chinese metaphors, analyses the similarities and differences of metaphorical concept between English and Chinese and stresses that context furnishes the basis for the understanding of metaphors and mastering the similarities and differences between English and Chinese metaphors can promete the understanding of metaphors and intercultural communication.
