The Cultural Differences between English and Chinese Idioms and Their Translation

本文从地理、历史、宗教信仰、风俗习惯、价值观念等几方面探讨了英汉习语的文化差异,并将这种差异粗略地归结为完全一致、部分一致、文化空缺和文化冲突等几种情况,同时,针对不同的情况提出了对应式转换、平行式转换、替代式转换和冲突式转换四种翻译模式。

This paper discusses the cultural differences between English and Chinese idioms in terms of geography, history, religion, customs, and values, and reduces the differences to Complete identity, partial identity, cultural vacancy, and cultural conflict. Meanwhile, directing at the differences, it puts forward four translation modes： corresponding, paralleling, substitution and conflicting.
