西南地区是基督教宣教活动最典型的区域之一,这与清末民初基督教传教士在少数民族中的成功宣教活动有关。英国传教士柏格理是基督教传教士在西南宣教活动的典型个案,作为基督教循道公会著名传教士之一,他在川滇黔边的苗族地区,积极创制苗族文字、开办教会学校并为苗民伸张正义,使得其传教工作取得了巨大成功。

Southwest China was a one of the most active regions of Christian missionary work. This is closely connected with successful missionary work of Christian missionaries among the ethnic groups in this region. Missionary Samuel Pollard from Britain was a case in point. As a famous missionary of Method of Christian, he achieved great success in his missionary work. He actively formulated the Miao characters, found church schools, and promoted justice for the Miao ethnic group in Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou.
