As the most successful novel of Tim O' Brien,ln the Lake of the Woods carries further two meta -fictive practices,i, e. generic instability and parody. Most important of all, the novel relates embedded and frame narratives to trauma representation. This paper analyzes how O' Brien has managed to extend the representation of personal trauma to the exploration of collective atrocity through the relevance of narrative levels to his own subjective experiences, and thus launch a criticism to contemporary American history and culture.
