林语堂的一生,特别痴心和沉醉于研究《红楼梦》,在他的心目中,《红楼梦》这部作品一直保留着其他文学作品所不能替代的重要位置,并对他的一生尤其是对他的文学创作影响颇深。在时代背景、人物的设置和情节的安插以及作品所反映出的哲学意义和文化积淀等多方面,《红楼梦》对《京华烟云》有着极其重大的影响。如果说《红楼梦》是一部中国封建社会的百科全书,那么《京华烟云》无疑是一部中国近代社会的百科全书。

A Dream of Red Mansions, one of the well-known Chinese classic novels, fascinated Yutang Lin during his lifetime. The novel was so important to him that nothing could substitute for it in his assessment of all novels and, what＇ s more, it impressed him on many aspects especially his literary works. His fiction Moment in Peking was affected greatly by the classic novel in many fields, such as the background characteristics of times, arrangement of characters/plots and the philosophical meaning and cultural deposit the fiction reflected. Like the novel A Dream of Red Mansions that may be regarded as an encyclopedia of Chinese feudalistic society, the Moment in Peking is an encyclopedia reflecting Chinese contemporary society.
