Starting from John Dewey＇s pragmatic philosophy and using Williams＇s poetry and poetics as case studies, Zhang Yuejun＇s In the American Grain： The Pragmatic Poetics of William Carlos Williams sets up a mode and builds a system in pragmatic criticism of poetry and poetics. This paper follows the authors arguments, probes into the various influences on Williams, and attempts to expound Williams＇s poetics and his interest in things native and foreign. The features and achievements of the book are also discussed. The paper concludes that the author has proved to be Williams＇s Chinese appreciator.
