The conflict on residence in the ports was one of the important diplomacy disputes between China and Britain in the middle and late 19th century. It was essentially a struggle between expansion and anti-expansion., but its objective cause was the indistibet stipulations about the ports opening for foreign trade in Sino-British treaties and the different interpretations on them between China and Britain. The event of entering Chaozhou city was a typical and special case of the conflict, also was its summit. In order to avoid and cast off the dispute thoroughly, Britain made many representations with China in several treaty negotiations, but with no resuits. The cause lay in the fact that the port residence problem was outside the confine of pure business question, and posed a threat to state sovereignty of China because of the inequality of the Sino-British treaties.
