Objective Venous angioma of orbit is a type of vascular malformation and is diffieuh to cure only by operation. As gamma knife was used in ophthalmology, this type of disease get excellent curative effect. This investigation was to assess the results and significances of gamma knife radiosurgery in a series of 8 patients with intraorbital venous angioma. Methods Eight patients with intraorbital venous angioma underwent gamma knife radiosurgery from September 1997 to June 2005 in our hospital. The mean volume of the tumor before gamma knife radiosurgery was 7.28 ±3.53 mm3 (ranged 1.0 to 29.3 mm3 ). The prescription peripheral dose varied between 15 and 20 Gy (mean 16.47 ± 1.26Gy) , and that for optic nerve was 6. 13 ± 1.88 Gy. The median follow-up period was 27 months(ranged from 18 to 72 months). Results Tumor shrinkage was seen in all patients, and the shrinkage was over 50% in 2 patients. The exophthalmos of all patients got improvement and visual acuity elevated after gamma knife radiosurgery. None of patients had severe adverse effect. Conclusion Gamma knife radiosurgery provides an effective management strategy in patients with intraorbital venous angioma.
