On the Law of Development of Chinese Classical Novels

小说自身的规律是中国古典小说发展的根据和内因,社会的政治、经济和文化因素是小说发展的条件和外因。中国古典小说的历史发展,从宏观上看,是自身的规律所划出的主航道奔腾向前的。在外部条件的影响之下,小说在曲折地前进,曲折的代价是无数的平庸之作,但这种曲折是围绕小说自身规律这一主轴而产生的上下波动。

Law of novel in itself is the basis and internal cause for the development of Chinese classical novels while social politics, economy and culture are the conditions and external cause for their development. In the macro sense, the historical development of the novels is designated by the law of their own. Under the influence of external conditions, novels zigzag forward at the cost of numerous mediocre works but they zigzag around the axis of a certain law.
